Traum- informed therapy is an approach to treating individuals who have experienced trauma. It seeks to understand the impact of trauma on a person’s life and to create a safe and supportive environment for healing. People who have experienced trauma often have a hard time opening up and connecting about their experiences. This can make finding healing from trauma very difficult. There are several innovative approaches for trauma-informed therapy practices that have been developed in recent years.

Eye Movement Desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)

One such trauma-informed therapy approach is called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR is a technique that uses eye movements to help individuals process traumatic memories. The therapist guides the individual through a series of eye movements while they recall an image related to a traumatic memory.

This is a form of psychotherapy that is used to treat trauma related symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. This approach involves a series of eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation, such as tapping or sounds while the individual recalls traumatic memories.

The goal of EMDR therapy is to help individuals process traumatic memories a desensitize triggers, emotions, and negative beliefs surrounding their trauma. There are many phases in the EMDR process including assessment, desensitization, Installation, body scan, closure, and reevaluation.

Trauma Focused CBT (TF-cBT)

Another trauma-informed therapy approach would be TF-CBT which stands for Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It is a treatment approach that is designed to help children, adolescents, and their families who have experienced trauma. The goal of TF-CBT is to help individuals and families to understand the impact of trauma on their lives and to develop skills to manage the symptoms of trauma.

The therapy is conducted in a structured format and typically includes several components including psychoeducation, skill-building, trauma processing, and enhancing safety and future growth. Overall, TF-CBT is an effective treatment approach for individuals and families who have experienced trauma.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)

The final trauma-informed therapy treatment approach that will be discussed is ART which stands for Accelerated Resolution Therapy. Similar to EMDR, this trauma informed treatment also uses bilateral eye movement.

The goal of ART is to help the individual to identify physical sensations associated with trauma and to release the energy associated with those sensations. This process helps the individual to release trauma- related tension and to reduce the emotional impact of traumatic memories.

Another important aspect of ART as a trauma-informed therapy, is a concept called voluntary image replacement. This phase of the treatment allows individuals to create more positive imagery surrounding a traumatic event or to take care of unfinished business that may keep a person stuck in their trauma.

The goal of ART is to help the individual process traumatic memories in a safe and supportive environment. The therapy is typically conducted over 1-6 sessions involving a thorough assessment of the individual’s history and current symptoms, trauma processing/desensitization, rescripting, closure and reevaluation.
